Is a NSW Pink Slip a Road Test?
Mostly no, but the brakes can be. Most of a NSW pink slip (eSafety check) is a stationary inspection. Under Transport for NSW rules, brakes are tested one of three ways: a roller brake tester, a skid plate tester, or a decelerometer on a "nominated road" (an on-road brake test). A mobile inspector uses the decelerometer method, driving the vehicle to at least 30 km/h then stopping it hard.
- Lights, tyres, steering, suspension, body and seatbelts are inspected with the car parked
- The mobile brake test is road-tested with a GPS-enabled decelerometer, in daylight, on a sealed level surface (Light Vehicle Safety Check Standards 101.03)
- "Nominated road" is a real TfNSW term: on-road brake tests use a road or brake test area nominated by the inspection station and approved by Transport for NSW (AIS Business Rules, rule 1.18)
- The brake test must not be within 500 metres of a school or school zone, near pedestrian crossings, or in high-density traffic (Supplementary AIS Business Rules for Mobile Inspections, rule 2.09m)

Common Questions About Pink Slip Inspections
How long is a pink slip valid in NSW?
A pink slip (eSafety check) is valid for six months from the date of inspection in New South Wales. You must complete a pink slip inspection every year if your vehicle is more than five years old to renew your registration with Service NSW.
How much does a pink slip cost?
The maximum fee for a pink slip in NSW is regulated by Service NSW. Pink Slips NSW charges a transparent fixed price of $100 for standard cars and light vehicles, with mobile service included. Caravans, trailers, and motorbikes have separate set pricing.
Can I drive on expired rego to get a pink slip?
Driving an unregistered vehicle in NSW is illegal and carries significant fines and demerit points. The safest option is to book a mobile pink slip inspector to come to your address, so you do not need to drive the vehicle until the registration is renewed with TfNSW.
What happens if I fail the pink slip inspection?
If your vehicle fails the eSafety check, you receive a list of repairs required to pass. Our inspector can advise on the most cost-effective workshop or mobile mechanic. Once repairs are complete, the re-inspection of the failed items is included at no additional charge within 14 days.
